Sundarbans is the most important traveling spot of Bangladesh. The name Sundarban can be literally translated as “beautiful forest”. It is the biggest halophytic mangrove forest of the world. Sundarban is about 10000 square km (3900 square mile). It is situated between India and Bangladesh but more than 60 percent is situated in Bangladesh. But the most important fact is- Sundarban is a UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE. The west part of Sundarban is located in India and the South, East and West parts are protected in Bangladesh. The history of the Sundarban’s area can be traced back to 200-300 AD.

The Mughal Kings leased the forests of the Sundarbans to nearby residents during their period. The Surveyor General named Persian was the first person who was mapped the area in1764. British east India Company obtained proprietary rights from the Mughal Emperor Alamgir in 1957. In 1869 the first Forest Management Division to have jurisdiction over the Sundarbans was established. A large part of the Sundarbans Forests was declared as reserved forests under the Forest Act in 1865. In 1879, a headquarters built in the Khulna. First management plan for the Sundarbans Forest was written in the period 1893 to 1898. This part of Sundarban is densely covered by mangrove forest and is the largest reserves for the Bengal tiger.

The Coordinates of Sundarbans is 21°56′59″N89°10′59.988″E, Country Bangladesh, and the Division is Khulna Division, nearest city: Khulna, Satkhira, Bagerhat. The forest limited by North-Bagerhat, Satkhira and Khulna Districts, South Bay of Bengal, East Baleshwar river, Pirojpur, Barishal district and West Raimangal and Haribhanga rivers which is both in Bangladesh and West Bengal in India.
