Sylhet tourism guide

At present backdrop, now a day’s Bangladesh has become one of the most important traveling places to the tourist. And the most important fact is, it is not only to the people of Bangladesh but also for the foreign people. By taking this importantly, we are trying to give the proper and appropriate guide lines (as much as we can do) about travel in Bangladesh. We believe that it will be a great solution of your traveling problem. In our previous discussions we have been talking about many important and beautiful traveling places of Bangladesh. Such as Bandarban, Nilgiri, Tindu, also about some place of Khagrachari district and some place of Rangamati district. Today we will talk about another most beautiful and obviously most important traveling place “SYLHET”. 

At present time Sylhet has become very important traveling spot Bangladesh to the tourist. Sylhet is one of the most beautiful traveling or tourism spot of Bangladesh. In Sylhet there are various kinds of traveling spots like beautiful tea gardens, lots of beautiful rivers, some hills which are may be small but very beautiful to look at, some beautiful haurs and some historical places. In Sylhet there are some falls also as traveling spot. We will discuss all about these tourism spots in our site. We will give you guide line and solution of traveling problem that you faces when you travel. First of all let us see something about SYLHET.

The coordinates of Sylhet is about 24°53′52″N91°52′17″E.Sylhet is one of the most beautiful and most attractive tourism spots of Bangladesh. It is situated on banks of the “SURMA RIVER”. According to the geographical map it is in the north-east Bangladesh. There are near about 500,000 people live in sylhet. There are lots of beautiful places in sylhet. Tea estates, sub-tropical hills, rain forests and river valleys are surrounding the city. Even there are lots of shrine and mazar in sylhet. Because it is also the Islamic spiritual center and was the home of some biggest Islamic Sufis. That’s why it is also known as city of 360 Sufis. Among all of them the most important are “HAZRAT SHAH JALAL (R)” & “HAZARAT SHAH PARAN (R)”. Lots of important persons have born in sylhet. Such as Genarel M.A.G Osmani the Commander-in-Chief of Bangladesh Liberation war in 1971, one of the most famous actor of Bangladesh Salman Shah etc. About Sylhet, there is one more important fact & that is- The Sylhet Division produces most of Bangladesh's tea yield and natural gas. So that’s why Sylhet has become one of the most important traveling zones and one of the most attractive places to the tourist. 

Till now we have known about Sylhet and it’s beauty. Now we discuss about the main attraction of Sylhet district. Actually there are lots of beautiful places in Sylhet. Kean Bridge and the Ali Amjad Clock:

There is an ancient iron bridge on bank of Surma River when you put first step in the city. One can spend some pleasant time on the bank. It’s too much exciting to roam on boot. Near the bridge you can see the Ali Amzad’s 140 year’s old watch. That place would be a beautiful tourism spot to the travelers who like adventure. Michel kin was the governor of Asam state in previous century. He came to visit the Sylhet. To remind his charming memory this bridge has been constructed. According to the history, then train was the only medium to contact with Asam. For reasonable reason this historical iron bridge was made. In 1933 the railway department started to construct the bridge. And in 1936 the construction of the bridge was completed and opened for all. In 1971 during the liberation war the regiment of East Pakistan blown away some part of it by dynamite. After the liberation war it was repaired by woods and some other elements and opened for small vehicles. 

Surma River:

Surma River is one of the most beautiful and one of biggest river of Bangladesh. Surma River is a part of Surma-Meghna River system. This river starts from the Barak River of India. Surma River is divided into two parts one is Surma River and another is Kushiyara River. The average depth of Surma River is near about 280 feet or 86 m and maximum depth is about 550 or 170 m. Surma River is a perfect watery place to have a beautiful boat journey and this is also a great opportunity to have a family and friends time. Every year the program of “Boat rowing” is held on this famous Surma River.

How to go:

Now the main problem is how to go or how to reach in Sylhet. To go Sylhet from Dhaka one can use bus, train or air lines. The bus services are Shymoly, Hanif, Ena, Egal,Shohag, Greenlineare some main bus services. The rent of A/C service will be 1200 tk (+,-) and the rent of none A/C service will be 470 tk. The train services are Kalni, Jountika, Upoban etc. Rent would be 245tk to 1300tk depending on classes.

Where to stay: 

There are lots of hotels in Sylhet city. Some of the main hotels are Hotel Eastern Gate and Panahar Restaurant Sylhet, Hotel Gulshan Sylhet, Hotel Dargah View, Greenland Hotel and Restaurant, Hotel City Link International, Surma Valley Rest House, Hotel Baharain Residential, Hotel Qureishi Residence, Hotel Ajmeer, Hotel Payra etc.

The full name of Hazrat Shah Jalal (R) is Shah Jalal ad-Din al-Mujarrad al-Turk al Naqshbandi (1271 CE to 15 March 1364 CE). Hazrat Shah Jalal (R) was one of the most important Sufi Muslim at that time of Bengal. Hazrat Shah Jalal’s name is associated with the Muslim movement into the north eastern Bengal. He was the spread of Islam in Bangladesh through Sufism. There is a long history of his of travel between the Middle East, Persia, Central Asia and South Asia. According to the history, Hazrat Shah Jalal (R) arrived at Sylhet in 1303. The Mazar of Hazrat Shah Jalal (R) is situated at Sylhet. Hazrat Shah Jalal (R) was the teacher of Sunnah of Muslim religion. He was performing prayers in solitary atmosphere. Hazrat Shah Jalal (R) always lead a solitary, retire and lonely life as an ascetic. For this Hazrat Shah Jalal (R) was called by the name of Al Mujarrad. He was given the name by Shaykh-ul-Mashaykh. Hazrat Shah Jalal’s (R) birthday and birth place was not confirmed by the history. But a number of scholars have claimed that Hazrat Shah Jalal (R) was born in 1271 CE in Turkey. And he travel to Yemen for further learning. Again, some believe Hazrat Shah Jalal (R) was born in Yemen. 

The name of his mother was Syeda Hasina Fatima and the name of his father was Mohammad bin Ibrahim. Hazrat Shah Jalal’s (R) father was a Muslim cleric. Hazrat Shah Jalal (R) was raised by his uncle named Syed Ahmed Kabir who lived in Mecca. He was learned from him also. Hazrat Shah Jalal (R) was Hafiz of islam and became an Islamic Theology. It took 30 years to achieve the spiritual education. He did lot’s of practice and meditation to achieve the spiritual education of his entire life. According to the legend it was known that, once one of his uncles Sheikh Kabir gave Hazrat Shah Jalal (R) a handful of soil. Then he asked Hazrat Shah Jalal (R) to travel to India. He asked Hazrat Shah Jalal (R) to propagate Islam in any place of India where the soil was exactly matches that which Hazrat Shah Jalal (R) was given by his uncle in both smell and color. As a result Hazrat Shah Jalal (R) started his travel to India to settle Islam and he found the match of the soil in Sylhet of Bangladesh.

Hazrat Shah Jalal (R) devoted himself to Islam for his entire life. He was a very simple person. His life was very simple. Hazrat Shah Jalal (R) travels a lot of countries. He was a great guide line to the people of Sylhet about Islam. Hazrat Shah Jalal (R) always tried to help people and tried to give them good solution of their problems. After traveling in Sylhet Hazrat Shah Jalal (R) spend his rest of life in here. Hazrat Shah Jalal (R) was died in 15 March 1346 CE. His dargah is situated in Sylhet which is known as Dargah Mahalla. It is one of the most important shrine of Bangladesh. It is very well known traveling place to the traveler for travel. There is a mosque in here which is the largest mosque in Sylhet and one of the largest in Bangladsh.

How to go:

Now we will discuss how should travel in Sylhet and the shrine of Hazrat Shah Jalal (R). For traveling in Sylhet from Dhaka one can use bus, train or air lines. If you travel there by rickshaw the rent will be 60-70tk and if you travel by CNG the rent will be 120-150tk.

After traveling in Sylhet you can stay in hotels or in Hazrat Shah Jalal (R) shrine. There are lots of hotels in Sylhet city. The main hotels of Sylhet are Hotel Eastern Gate and Panahar Restaurant Sylhet, Hotel Gulshan Sylhet, Hotel Dargah View, Greenland Hotel and Restaurant, Hotel City Link International, Surma Valley Rest House, Hotel Baharain Residential, Hotel Qureishi Residence, Hotel Ajmeer, Hotel Payra etc. you can stay in Hazrat Shah Jalal (R) shrine at the time of URASH.
