Sundarbans is the most important traveling spot of Bangladesh. The name Sundarban can be literally translated as “beautiful forest”. It is the biggest halophytic mangrove forest of the world. Sundarban is about 10000 square km (3900 square mile). It is situated between India and Bangladesh but more than 60 percent is situated in Bangladesh. But the most important fact is- Sundarban is a UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE. The west part of Sundarban is located in India and the South, East and West parts are protected in Bangladesh. The history of the Sundarban’s area can be traced back to 200-300 AD.

The Mughal Kings leased the forests of the Sundarbans to nearby residents during their period. The Surveyor General named Persian was the first person who was mapped the area in1764. British east India Company obtained proprietary rights from the Mughal Emperor Alamgir in 1957. In 1869 the first Forest Management Division to have jurisdiction over the Sundarbans was established. A large part of the Sundarbans Forests was declared as reserved forests under the Forest Act in 1865. In 1879, a headquarters built in the Khulna. First management plan for the Sundarbans Forest was written in the period 1893 to 1898. This part of Sundarban is densely covered by mangrove forest and is the largest reserves for the Bengal tiger.

The Coordinates of Sundarbans is 21°56′59″N89°10′59.988″E, Country Bangladesh, and the Division is Khulna Division, nearest city: Khulna, Satkhira, Bagerhat. The forest limited by North-Bagerhat, Satkhira and Khulna Districts, South Bay of Bengal, East Baleshwar river, Pirojpur, Barishal district and West Raimangal and Haribhanga rivers which is both in Bangladesh and West Bengal in India. Sundarbans covers about 10,000 square kilometers of which about 6,000 square kilometers are in Bangladesh. This forest is intersected by a complex network of tidal waterways, mudflats and Small Island of salt-tolerant mangrove forests which is very attractive place in Bangladesh. This forest is known for the eponymous Royal Bengal tiger.

It is the perfect place for photography actually for wildlife photography and also for the adventure. In this forest you can see the famous Royal Bengal Tiger, wildlife viewing, boating inside the forest will call recordings, nature study, meeting fishermen, wood-cutters and honey-collectors, peace and tranquility in the wilderness, seeing the world's biggest mangrove forest and the riverine beauty. Because of its geographical location, it is quite hard to reach the Sundarbans forest for the tourists and that’s why it will be a great adventure for you. One must travel to Sundarban by boat. For backpackers and the individual tourist it is so hard to organize or arrange a tour to Sundarban forest of their own.

Therefore, if you want to go to the Sundarban you must join a group of tourist of 10 or 12 members which may organized by tout organization or by a handful of operators or you can make a tour with your friends if anyone of you known very well about Sundarbans. If you are rich in population site it will also help to demise your expenses. Sundarbans features two Eco regions. One is “Sundarbans freshwater swamp forests” and another is “Sundarbans mangroves.

Sundarbans freshwater swamp forests:

It is a tropical moist broadleaf forest Eco region of Bangladesh which is represents the brackish swamp forests that lie behind the Sundarbans Mangroves. In this area the water is only slightly brackish and becomes quite fresh during the rainy season. This forest covers an area of 14600 square kilometers of the vast Ganges-Brahmaputra Delta, extending from the northern part of Khulna District and also at the mouth of the Bay of Bengal. There are two protected areas in this Eco region. One is Narendrapur which total area is 110 square kilometers and other is Ata Danga Boar which total area is 20 square kilometers that cover a mere 130 square kilometers of the Eco region. In this Eco region habitat loss is so extensive. The remaining habitat of this Eco region is so fragmented. It is so difficult to read the composition of the original vegetation of this Eco region.

Sundarbans Mangroves Eco region is the most beautiful part of the Sundarbans forest for the adventure. It is the largest mangrove Eco system in the world. The total area of this Eco region is about 20,400 square kilometers. Heritiera fomes is the primary mangrove species which is locally known as sundari or sundri. This forest which is mangrove forest is not home to a great variety of plants. The undergrowth in this forest is mostly seedlings of the mangrove trees. The other species of this mangrove forest are Avicennia spp., Nypa fruticans, Bruguiera gymnorrhiza, Xylocarpus mekongensis, Cereops decandra, Xylocarpus granatum, Rhizophora mucronata and Sonneratia apetala. There are 26 of the 50 broad mangrove types found in the world grow well in the Sundarbans forest. This forest will be a great place for adventure. Sundarbans mangrove forests of Bangladesh differ greatly from other non-deltaic coastal mangrove forests and upland forests associations. David Prain was recorded total 245 genera and 334 plant species in 1903. Sundarbans mangroves are dominated by the Malvaceae and Euphorbiaceae. The common trees are Sundari (Heritiera fomes), gewa (Excoecaria agallocha), keora (Sonneratia apetala) and goran (Ceriops decandra). Sundari (Heritiera littoralis) is the characteristic tree of this forest. Sundari is the beautiful tree and it yields a hard wood. This wood used for making house, furniture and boats. Another most attraction in this forest is spotted deer (Axis axis). Golpata (Nypa fruticans) and spear grass (Imperata cylindrica) are also well distributed in the Sundarbans forest. One can pass an interesting time and have adventure by traveling this beautiful forest which will be the memorable day or tour in your life.

A lot of wildlife is living in the Sundarbans forest. Royal Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris tigris) is the most dangerous and important animal in the Sundarban forest. The other animals are fishing cats, Macaques, wild boars, foxes, jungle cats, flying foxes etc. Sundarbans forest is also rich in bird life. There are 170 species of birds live in this forest. The common birds are swamp partridges, water hens, red jungle flows, coots, cotton teals, herring gulls, Caspian terns, gray herons, woodpeckers, pintails and so on. There are some fish like butterfish, electric ray, silver carp, barb and amphibians found this beautiful forest. You can see the tigers, deer, monkey, crocodiles, birds and also natural beauty in Hiron Point (Nilkamal).Katka to Kachikhali (Tiger Point) is the grassy way wild tracking where you can see tigers, birds, monkeys, deer etc. and Tin Kona Island is also for tigers and Deer. In Dublar Char the (Island) you can see the deer to graze.

Sundarbans plays a vital rule in the economy of Bangladesh. Every year lots of tourists come to visit Bangladesh to travel Sundarbans. It is the most important economic source. This forest provides a wonderful aesthetic attraction for local and foreign tourists and the best place for adventure. There are about 4 million people lives in the sundarbans forest. It also provides natural protection to the life. The protected area of sundarbans mangroves are Sundarbans National Park, Sajnakhali wildlife Sanctuary, Sundarbans East wildlife Sanctuary, Sundarbans West wildlife Sanctuary and Sundarbans South wildlife Sanctuary.

Sajnakhali Wildlife Sanctuary: 

It is situated in the northern part of the sundarbans in South 24 Parganas district, West Bengal, India. The total area of this forest is about 362 square kilometers. This beautiful Wildlife was set up as a sanctuary in 1996. There are many wildlife animals and beautiful birds in this Sanctuary like as water fowl, heron, spotted deer, wild boar, tigers, Water monitors Lizards, otters, crocodiles etc.

Sundarban National Park: 

Sundarbans national park is one of the largest reserves for the Bengal tiger. One part of this park is in Bangladesh and other part of this park is in West Bengal, India. Sundarban National park was set up as a sanctuary in 1977 and it was declared as a national park in 1984. There are many beautiful birds and wildlife animals in this national park. Salt water crocodiles are also found in this park. It is the perfect place to travel for extra experience in our boring life.

Sundarbans East & West Wildlife Sanctuary: 

This Wildlife Sanctuary is a UNESCO World Heritage site. There are several mangroves, with deer ground, river bank and so on. The total remaining tiger is about 350 in the Bangladesh. The common animals are Spotted Deer, Wild Boar, Royal Bengal Tiger, Macaque Monkey etc. It is in the eastern part of Sundarbans. Total area is about 31,227 hectares. Sundari trees are available here. You can also see many types of birds in this Sanctuary. It is the most beautiful place in Sundarbans. Every year lots of tourists come to visit this forest or wildlife Sanctuary. Really it’s an amazing place for traveling. You cannot forget sundarbans travel in your life because of its natural beauty.

Sundarbans South Wildlife Sanctuary:

The total area is about 36,970 hectors. The common trees are Gewa, Goarn, Passur etc. of this Sanctuary. It is the southern part of Sundarbans main forest. In this south wildlife sanctuary you can also see different type’s birds, trees and wildlife’s. In this portion you can capture different types of sight-seeing and natural picture. For the photography Sundarbans South Wildlife Sanctuary is an ideal place. Everyday lots of local and foreign tourists come to visit and photo-shoots in this beautiful place. 

How to go there:

To travel to Sundardans forest from Dhaka, you have to go first Khulna or Mangla to board the boat. There are many different ways to have this journey. You can go by bus, train or airplane. However, once you get into the forest, you must have a boat to roaming around. Because there are lots of lacking’s of infrastructural facilities, so that tourists have to accommodate on board the vessel during their traveling time inside the forest. Boats used for this purpose are normally equipped with rooms and meals facilities on board.By Bus: The bus services from Dhaka to Khulna are Hanif, Shyamoli, Green line, BRTC, Shyamoli etc. By Train: The train services are Kapotakkha express, Sundarban express, Rupsha express, Simanta enxpress, Chitra express etc. Then you can hire a launch or stemmer or privet boat to go Sundarbans.
