St. Martin’s Island-Bangladesh

Today we introduce you to the beauty of St. Martin’s Island in Bangladesh. St. Martin’s Island is the only coral island in the Bangladesh. The Coordinates of the island are 20°37'45.64"N, 92°19'29.00"E and the Country of this island is Bangladesh and the division is Chittagong Division, and the districts is Cox’s Bazar District. St. Martin’s Island is the only coral island in Bangladesh which is in the northeast part of the Bay of Bengal. It is about 9 km south of the tip of the Cox’s Bazar-Teknaf peninsula and 8 km west of the northwest coast of Myanmar. St. Martin’s is the most beautiful place in Bangladesh like as Cox’s Bazar, Bandarban, Khagrachari, Rangamati, Chittagoang etc.

St. Martin’s Island is a small Island, but it is perfect for tourist who is truly interested in escaping the hold of a modern life. It is possible for you to walk around the island in a day because it measures only 8 km. This island is also called “Chera Dwip” because of the surrounding coral reef of the island.

The main attraction of St. Martin’s Island is:

Coral: Coral reefs are the world’s most spectacular and amazing underwater environments. There is a beautiful sandy beach on the St. Martin’s Island. St. Martin Island is abundant in corals and the surrounding coral reef of the island has an extension named “Chera Dweep”. Coral communities in St. Martin extend to about 200m offshore with the maximum coral cover of 7.4% and a colony density of 1.3m to 2.0 m. These comprise 66 coral species, of which 36 are living corals, 11 are soft corals and 19 are fossil corals. This coral is looking black and this beach is also known as ‘Rocky Beach’. These corals are very attractive to the tourists.

Sun Rising: Rising Sun is the main attraction of St. Martin’s Island. One can be able to visible best sight of the sun rising from here. Every morning many tourists gather here to enjoy this beauty. When the light of the sun falls in the sea during rising moment this scenery is very attractive to the tourists. The tourist enjoy the moments with their near and dears and sometime some of them are singing a song of their favorite singers which songs are related to the sun or light.
Sun-Setting: You can also enjoy the sun-setting in the St. Martin’s Island. To enjoy it better you have to present in the island because sea glowing red during the sun setting moment. It may take ten or twenty minutes for setting. Many tourists and local people gather here to enjoy the beauty of a sunset. The tourists take photos of beautiful sceneries with various styles. Some tourists take their photos with the sun and taking some photos as the sun is setting in his hand etc.

Moonlit Night: You can also enjoy a moonlit night in this island. At night the island is clam and quiet with gentle murmurs of coconut trees swaying with the winds coming from the bay. This provides an unearthly peaceful and majestic experience like as Cox’s Bazar or Kuakata etc. and the golden rays of the moon attract the tourists very much.

Walking through Island: Walking through St. Martin Island is very interesting because of the beach is sandy. As St. Martin’s Island is not very large you can walk through the whole island and enjoy the beauty of this island and Bay of Bengal. During walking beside the island the gentle air of the Bay of Bengal flows through your body will refresh your mind and you feel that you are in the Heaven. This fantastic moment you can’t forget in your life. As the main job of the local people is fishing, here you can eat delicious fried fish from the seller during walking which is very interesting for the tourists.

Journey by Engine Boat or Speed Boat: You can make a journey by Engine Boat or Speed Boat around the St. Martin Island. You can enjoy the whole island at a glance by this journey. You can also see the border of Myanmar, ships in the sea, Strong waves of the sea and many birds flying in the sky. Tourists enjoy this journey very much.

Narikel Jinjira: The local name of this island is “Narikel Jinjira” or "Narical Gingira". It’s meant an Island of Coconut. This named Narikel Gingira because on St. Martin’s Island has many coconut trees which make this island more beautiful these trees protect the St. Martin’s Island from many natural disasters like cyclones, Tornado, Tsunami, etc. The most interested topic is you can relax in the beach with a sweet coconut because coconut is available here.

On the beautiful St. Martin’s Island you have to maintain some rules which provided by Bangladesh Government. That is given below: “We have to keep this beautiful coral island neat & clean. This ground water level in this island is very close to the surface. So the water can easily get contaminated by open defecation and result in spreading water borne diseases like diarrhea. A study showed that the water of this area contains germs 100 folds more than that of normal level. Please dispose of all kinds of wastes in the dustbins kept in different places. Your support is truly required to maintain the biodiversity of this island.”

Easy way to reach St. Martin’s:

Dhaka to TeknafTo reach St. Martin’s firstly you have to reach Teknaf or Cox’s Bazar or Chittagong. Though by airlines and train you can reach Chittagong, but by bus you can reach Cox’s Bazar or Teknaf very easily. We will try to give you some information about transport.

By Bus: If you want to go to St. Martin by bus you have to go first Teknaf. There are lots of bus services here from Dhaka to Teknaf. The bus services are: Green Line, 9/2, Outer Circular Road, Momen Bagh, Rajarbagh, Dhaka. By Train: There is no Rail connection up to Cox’s Bazar but you can go up to Chittagong. Then by Bus or car you can go to Cox’s Bazar. There are many train services are available from the Kamalapur Railway Station, Dhaka to Chittagong, they are InterCity (Fast quality train), Turna (Quality night coach train), Express, Mail, Mohanagar Provati, Mohanagar Godhuli, Paharica Express, Chattrala Express, etc. and the rent fee per seat of AC (Barth) = 1093 Taka/, AC (Seat) = 731 Taka/, Snigdha = 610 Taka/, 1st Class (Barth)= 635 Taka/, 1st Class (Seat) = 425 Taka/, Shuvon(Chair) = 320 Taka per person. Airlines and trains are the perfect solution for your comfortable journey.

Teknaf to St. Martin’s:

From the Teknaf jetty you can find many ships of St. Martin’s Island like as an Eagle, MV Farhan, Rangabali, Kutubdia, Keyari Sindabad etc., but from these ships Keari Sindabad is the best and only tourist friendly ship transportation service for the St. Martin tour and this ship have enough safety equipment for the tourist during the journey of this route. Every day during the tourist season this ship beginning from Teknaf at 09:30 AM and retire from St. Martin at 03:00 PM. A round trip ticket is 450 taka per person and also book from Dhaka. Don’t worry if you miss the ship. You can use Trawler by 100 taka per person or hire speed boat which is costly. During this journey you can watch the beauty of the Bay of Bengal and many birds flying in the sea which is very attractive to the tourists.
